Boris Hermann is a German offshore racing sailor who has set his eyes on becoming the first German to compete in the Vendée Globe in 2020.
The Vendée Globe is a single-handed (solo) non-stop yacht race around the world without assistance. Basically this means if you participate in this race you are putting your life on the line.
The race presents some real challenges for the sailors; most notably the strong winds and wave conditions in the Southern Ocean, the long unassisted duration of the race, and the fact that the route takes the sailors far from the reach of any normal emergency response. If you get into trouble you are on your own. Good luck.
So it is probably safe to say that Greta Thunberg -who has single-handedly refocused the world’s view on climate change- is in safe hands. In safe hands because she is currently sailing with Boris and his team on their zero-emissions racing yacht “Malizia“. They are taking Greta and her dad across the Atlantic to participate in the United Nations Climate Summit in New York on the 23rd of September 2019.
I am writing about this here because I think it is an amazing endevour and also to do my bit to raise awareness about climate change and stuff we can do. I have written previously about my views on renewable energy and other solutions to at least do something. Oh, yes and I like sailing 😉
